Space Oddity & The Supahcute Science Fair Show
The inspiration:
“Space Oddity: A Tribute to Chris Hadfield” This is my piece for the Supahcute Science Fair show at Leanna Lin’s Wonderland Gallery in LA. I’ve been very inspired by the International Space Station (ISS) as of late. I’ve always been a huge science fiction fan but following Col. Chris Hadfield on Twitter started my love affair with the real thing. Seeing the pictures of Earth, knowing we have all these people living in space… it has complete captured my imagination. And then his amazing music video Space Oddity blew my mind! Now I excitedly follow those who bravely leave our planet to explore and experiment.
The piece:
I wanted to create a mix between an infographic and a sculpture. The are so many interesting facts about the ISS I had to include some text. That’s why I added Fun Fact panels to the sides of the frame. To the right are the images for the panels. The choice to use an animal instead of a human to represent Hadfield came to me because I thought it brought home the feeling of how foreign and vulnerable we are in space (and yes, I really do think about this stuff way too much haha). I choose to use the astronaut’s national animal as a fun way to show what a global project the ISS is. In the future, I hope to do a art piece of Sergei Krikalev as a bear :) Size: 10″ x10″ Mix Media: wood, stone clay, paper, wire and acrylic paint
