Designer Con 2013 Recap
Last month I went to Designer Con for the first time and it is now one of my new favorite cons! The focus on art “toys”, designer vinyl and sculpture makes it a very unique show and one close to my heart.
I heard this year was the first year the show was 2 days long. There was a nice steady stream of fans, artists and press on the floor. Pasadena seems lovely although I didn’t see much of it. I spent most of my time reconnecting with artists, meeting new ones and looking at all the great art work. I snuck away from my table Sunday to take some time to talk to a few folks. In my pictures you will see a few but by no means all the talented people I met but it’s a good sampling.
One of my favorite topics was materials, asking other artists about their favorite supplies for casting, sculpting and one-offs. There were also vendors who do casting as a business so I learned a lot from walking around. My second favorite topic was “going independent”. Who’s holding down a day job? Who’s just doing their art? This made for really interesting conversations about how to turn your art into a business and the many hurdles involved.
Can’t wait to go back next year! And for any thinking of going next year they’ve already set the dates November 8-9, 2014. I highly recommend it!
The slideshow below shows my photos of a few of my favorite booths but if you are curious to see more work there are LOTS of other photo collections around to see even more awesome art.
